Description/Eligibility/Service Details
Description | The Caledon Trailway runs 35 km from Terra Cotta to Palgrave, following the path of an abandoned rail line that once linked Hamilton with Barrie. The trail crosses major natural features including the Humber and Credit Rivers, the Oak Ridges Moraine and Niagara Escarpment. This trail is for non-motorized uses: walking/jogging, cycling, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. The trail surface is not maintained in winter. The rail section was purchased in 1989 by the Town of Caledon, and became the first officially-designated portion of the Trans Canada Trail (now called The Great Trail) in 1995. In June 1996, Caledon East received Canada's first Trans Canada Trail Pavilion, built in a park that also features a pond, wetland and Caledon's Walk of Fame. The pavilion was refurbished in 2017 and now features the new name, information and mapping for The Great Trail, plus all previously-displayed donor information. Along the trail are other Stationlands Parks located in Palgrave, Cheltenham and Inglewood. These sites feature gardens, open areas, and seating. Inglewood and Cheltenham sites have small parking areas, Palgrave has on-street parking only. Trail Facts: * motorized vehicles are prohibited, except mobility-assist devices * trail surface is crushed limestone * trail width is approx. 8 ft * trail from Airport Road to Mountainview Road, including the Trans Canada Trail Pavilion Park, is fully-accessible. All other parts of the trail have gates at road crossings, with low sections to allow wheel chairs, strollers, etc. to be lifted over. * Parking for at least 1 or 2 cars is available at most road crossings. * Larger parking areas are at McLoughlin Rd in Inglewood, Ken Whillans Resource Mgmt Area at the Hwy 10 pedestrian bridge (free for trail users), Town Hall and Community Complex on Old Church Rd. in Caledon East, and at Gore Road. Google-based printable maps can be found at www.walkandrollpeel.ca along with info and tips on all forms of active transportation. Print maps are available at tourist information sites, Caledon Town Hall and libraries, and by contacting the Town of Caledon by phone (905-584-2272) or e-mail (recreation@caledon.ca). |
Dates | Open all year - no winter maintenance Equestrians and cyclists are asked to stay off of or to the sides of the Trailway from Nov. 1 through April 30, to avoid damage to the trail surface during freeze/thaw cycles. |
