Description | Syl Apps Youth Centre is a 48-bed, Secure Residential Forensic Mental Health Facility for Ontario male and female youth who have significant mental health concerns. Youth can be admitted to Syl Apps for assessment and treatment through three different avenues. The treatment model provided to all youth is essentially the same however is tailored to meet individual needs. SECURE TREATMENT (under the Child & Family Services Act - CFSA) Provides Secure Treatment to youth who are at significant risk to themselves or others. The Secure Treatment program is a provincial resource and as such, youth are referred and screened and if appropriate are admitted through Family Court Orders from all regions of the province. SECURE DETENTION AND CUSTODY (under the Youth Criminal Justice Act - YCJA) Provides assesment and treatment for YJ youth identified with significant mental health issues. The program is a provincial resource and referrals to the program come from other secure YJ facilities, through the Youth Justice Services Placement Co-ordination Unit only. Syl Apps is also the direct intake for Secure YJ Females for central region. Ontario Review Board (under the Criminal Code of Canada) Provides assessment and treatment to youth who are involved in the youth justice system who have been found Not Fit or Not Criminally Responsible and are ordered to Syl Apps by the Ontario Review Board. Syl Apps is designated as a Hospital for the purposes of the Ontario Review Board. At Syl Apps and throughout Kinark, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation interventions are based on the individual strengths and needs of each youth and whenever possible, are delivered in partnership with families or guardians, and community partners. The multi disciplinary treatment teams consist of Child and Youth Workers, Social Workers, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Nurses, Family Physicians, Art and Recreation Therapists, Teachers and Managers. Youth also access supports from other community partners and services. The Halton Board of Education operates an on-site section 23 school. VOLUNTEERS To be accepted as a volunteer one must: Participate in a personal interview to determine mutual compatibility with volunteer role requirements; Pass a criminal reference check including the vulnerable person sector screening; A driving record check may also be requested if applicable; Provide a medical certificate completed by a registered physician (Kinark will assist with the cost of the above); Provide at least two personal references, one of which must be professional, and work, or course of study related, and the other two, personal character; Be prepared to engage in all training sessions and activities; Sign and adhere to a confidentiality agreement; Available for a minimum commitment of two hours per week, for six months. Syl Apps is licensed by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and is accredited by Children's Mental Health Ontario (CMHO). |

Eligibility | Ages: 12 year(s) - 18 year(s) Secure Treatment - youth younger than 12 with approval of Minister of Ministrr of Children, Community and Social Service, youth older than 18 based on the length of their order. Secure Custody - youth 12 to 17 at the time of the offence Ontario Review Board - youth will stay until until such a time as the ORB determines they are fit to return to the community. At the age of 18 years they are considered for a transfer to an adult facility. |
